When I was a just seven years old I remember my father, sick with chronic kidney disease, playing baseball with me in the back yard of our asbestos-shingled duplex. He taught me how to hunt, how to fish and compete in sports. He taught me how to appreciate life through his own physical struggles. He was a mentor and my best friend.

Dad was a veteran of World War II,having fought to preserve our freedom as a member of the 89th Infantry Division. He was a rifle squad leader and dismantled booby traps. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service. When the war was over he joined the newly created Air Force and became a military policeman. He learned how to fly as a hobby.

Shorlty after joining the Air Force he was diagnosed with kidney disease-of which there was no cure- and which wore him down.He was in and out of hospitals for several years until he passed away in 1960.

I remember him today on Memorial Day and in advance of Father's Day as my hero.I think God for giving me my dad for the first eight years of my life.Dad, this day is lived for you.

Proverbs 23:22
"Listen to your father, who gave you life..." (NIV)
