Clarifying the Role of the SMS

Scouting Ministry Specialists (SMS) fulfill many important roles in scouting ministry.

Chief among them are servicing existing units (Cub Scout packs, Boy and Girl Scout troops, Venture crews, etc.) in local UM churches. SMS also help start new units in churches.

Currently, 164 SMS have registered with the Office of Civic Youth-Serving Agencies/Scouting, General Commission on United Methodist Men(GCUMM). The GCUMM is the agency responsible for scouting ministries in The United Methodist Church. In that role, the OCYSA/S defines the role and responsibilities of the SMS and serves as the coordinating body. This includes recruitment and training among other responsibilities.

We are thankful to these servant leaders who continue to define a new and exciting discipleship-making 'adaptive change' in scouting ministry.

Please contact our office for an SMS in your area or to enroll in the SMS ministry.
