Judge Carl Stewart receives Silver Torch Award

SHREVEPORT, La.––Carl E. Stewart, a judge on the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals for Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana and the former chairman of the UM Scouting Ministry Committee, is the latest recipient of the Silver Torch Award, an honor bestowed on individuals who have given exceptional service to scouting beyond the annual conference level.

Judge Stewart has served as a lay leader for St. James UMC in Shreveport, the Shreveport District and the Louisiana Annual Conference. He has served eight-year terms on both the General Commission on Religion and Race and the General Commission on United Methodist Men.

The judge served as a delegate to the 1996 General Conference in Denver and the 1996 and 2001 World Methodist Conferences in Rio de Janeiro and Brighton, England. He is currently a member of the Shreveport District Board of Trustees and the Louisiana Annual Conference Committee on Finance and Administration.

A graduate of Dillard University (B.A.-1971) and Loyola University School of Law (DDL –1974), he entered the U.S. Army after his 1974 admission to the Louisiana Bar Association and he served as a captain in the Judge Advocate General Crops until 1977. In 1985 he was elected judge of the First Judicial District Court of Caddo Parish and he was re-elected five years later. In 1991 he was elected to the Louisiana Second Circuit Court of Appeal and in 1994 he was appointed to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Judge Stewart currently serves on two national committees for the Boy Scouts, and he is a recipient of the Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope, and Silver Buffalo Awards for service to youth through scouting. He is also a fellow in the John Wesley Society, an honor from the men of St. James United Methodist Church.

He is married to the former Jo Ann Southall, and they are parents of three children and three grandchildren.
