ยท Ministry With the Poor

A new interactive website (www.ministryWITH.org) highlights the word "with."

Launched May 31 by the General Board of Global Ministries, in partnership with a denominational interagency task force and the Council of Bishops, the site challenges common assumptions that people do ministry "for" the poor.

Gil Hanke, topo staff executive and convenor of the General Secretaries Table, said he is encouraged by, "the direction the With campaign is leading us. This work reflects part of our essential DNA. It is much easier to ignore the poor, slightly easier to do work 'at' or 'to' or 'for' the poor, but With reminds us that Christ calls us to have a relational experience with the poor, to walk with them, and show that they are not forgotten or invisible.

"For Wesley this was intentional; a day without serving others was not a complete day," said Hanke. "As a denomination, we need to rediscover that, and when we do, we will return to a 'movement' status."

The site offers opportunities for viewers to post their own stories, photos and videos relating to experiences with ministry for the poor. Another section allows viewers to make a prayer request or leave a comment on a prayer.

Information about poverty, downloadable resources for individual and congregational use, blog posts by a variety of writers, a calendar of events and opportunities to donate money or “your time” will be updated on a regular basis.
