Overview

Before it went out of print, more than one million copies of Strength for Service to God and Country were distributed during World War II and the Korean War.

Fifty years later, in 2002, Evan Hunsberger was inspired by his grandfather's worn copy and, with the assistance of several GCUMM advisors, republished the book as his Eagle Scout project.

While many World War II veterans reported how the original book carried them through difficult days and years following the war, it was underestimated how much the pocket-sized books would be appreciated today.

"Soldiers like the format and they like the way in which the book ties them to past generations. Patients and staff find the book just as uplifting today as it must have been for men and women in World War II and the Korean War. The books continue to touch more souls every day."

Major John L. Kallerson, senior chaplain

Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC

After publishing almost 500,000 copies, the Strength for Service leadership team introduced a second volume, Strength for Service to God and Community, a book written for professionals and volunteers who serve as first responders.

We often forget that after families and friends of victims have been rescued, comforted or consoled, our first responders are also in need of emotional and spiritual support.

Strength for Service to God and Community provides spiritual encouragement and emotional strength for police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and all those who are engaged in the service of others in time of greatest need.

The Rev. Dr. Daniel G. Tackett, director of the International Police and Fire Chaplains Association, said the book will be an important tool for police and fire chaplains.

The Goal

Help us give a copy of the Strength for Service to God and Country daily devotional to every active duty member of the United States Armed Forces. You can participate in the effort to underwrite the publication and distribution of one million copies of this historic book.

"Strength for Service has proven to be a real blessing to my husband, Bill, who is proudly serving in our armed forces stationed in Kuwait. He has shared the book with some of the other men in his unit and the chaplain now uses my husband's copy every day when he prays with the helicopter pilots as they prepare to make their flights."

Domestic Distribution

  • Many scout troops, Churches, and other community organizations purchase devotional books in bulk for distribution to military personnel, veterans, police, firefighters, paramedics, first responders, prison guards, and other public servants in their local communities. This allows Strength for Service to fulfill its mission and vision of helping those who run towards danger in an effort to keep all of us safe.

"Thank you and all who have contributed to publishing Strength for Service. You have touched many lives in a positive, faith-promoting way. Please continue the good work. God bless and simper fidelis."

101st Airborne, Fort Campbell, Kent.
